Director of Accounting

 

Narragansett Bay Insurance Company seeks an experienced, innovative, problem-solver, who possesses a high degree of initiative and integrity, to join the management team at our rapidly growing insurance firm headquartered in the Providence area.

 

In this role, you will assist with establishing and maintaining accounting practices and procedures; oversee the preparation statutory and US GAAP financial statements; develop and maintain compliance with accounting policies; and provide thought leadership within the team.

 

Specific Duties

  • Oversee, manage and coordinate the day to day accounting and financial reporting functions of the Company.  This includes, but is not limited to month-end close, balance sheet review, coordination of tax filings, accounts payable and cash management and financial statement preparation.
  • Assist in the development, documentation and testing of the internal control environment.  Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and guidance around internal control policies and procedures.
  • Ensure quarter end and year end corporate internal and external audit financial reporting requirements are completed timely and accurately.
  • Coordinate month-end system close process, review financial statements for accuracy and completeness.  Record and review journal entries and review monthly account reconciliations. 
  • Research and propose solutions to complex accounting issues for both statutory and US GAAP.  Ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley and other corporate accounting policies and procedures.
  • Prepare financial statements and variance analysis on a monthly basis.  Assist in the development of internal management reporting and statistics that monitor overall business.
  • Manage and coordinate corporate licensing in all jurisdictions.
  • Responsible for annual audit coordination and support.  Interact with state regulators and coordinate triennial exams.
  • Monitor and safeguard assets, including accounts receivable and reinsurance recoverables.
  • Direct cash management functions to ensure monthly Accounts Payable and cash flow goals are met.
  • Participate in the management of capital adequacy; respond to regulators and rating agency issues. 

 

Qualifications

 

The ideal candidate must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance with at least ten years experience. 
  • A minimum of three years in public accounting and five years experience with property and casualty insurance
  • Strong knowledge of statutory accounting. 
  • Demonstrated strategic planning, leadership, and presentation skills a must.
  • CPA preferred. 
  • Experience with Excel, Word and PowerPoint a plus.
