Junior Accountant Position – New York, New York

We have found an interesting position with an interesting company. The position is with Helen Keller International. They are involved with programs supporting  ChildSight®, a vision screening and eyeglass provision program in schools throughout the United States. This company is solid and the position holds lots of potential. Here are the details:

The Junior Accountant reviews and processes disbursements and assists with other general accounting procedures as needed. Additionally, s/he provides accounting program support to ChildSight®, a vision screening and eyeglass provision program in schools throughout the United States.

Scope of Position:
Accounts Payable
• Review payment requests and invoices, travel & expense reports, and monthly corporate card statement receipts to ensure documentation is complete and in accordance with HKI policy and procedure and that no duplicate payments are made;
• Communicate with requestor or appropriate HKI staff when documentation is unclear, incomplete or incorrect;
• Enter invoices in the Financial Edge Accounts Payable system;
• Obtain payment authorization and check/wire signatures and mails all checks to payees;
• Respond to inquiries regarding the status of payments;
• Maintain filing for accounts payable including vendor files, employee and consultant travel and expense reports, corporate card monthly reports and field office financial reports; and
• Other duties as assigned.

ChildSight®:
• Collect, track and process all part-time timesheets, optometrist invoices and business mileage reports for the ChildSight® program and ensure accuracy of account codes and project budgets being charged;
• Review and process all ChildSight® expense, petty cash and travel reports to ensure accuracy of account codes being charged and conform to program policy and procedure;
• Prepare management reports (i.e., invoice reports, financial reports by location and active project list) and distribute to appropriate staff;
• In conjunction with the ChildSight® Grants Manager, monitor and analyze project spending and fund balances; and
• Assist the ChildSight® Grants Manager with budgeting and donor reporting as needed.

Requirements:
• Associates or Bachelors degree in related field (i.e., accounting) preferred;
• Minimum 1-2 years experience with accounts payable processing;
• Non-profit experience preferred;
• Excellent computer skills with advanced proficiency in Excel a must.
• Ability to work within a team structure as well as independently, be creative, take initiative, be attentive to detail and possess excellent interpersonal communications skills; and
• Dependability and good organizational skills necessary.

ACCOUNTANT INFORMATION:

Public accountants are required to take a special test for certification and get a special license from the state in which they live. Public accountants are well versed in business law, tax codes, auditing, financial reporting and financial accounting. All certified public accountants and most public accountants are licensed public accountants.
